Initially created as modeling excercise this project began to have a life of its own.
This project started as a modeling expertise that grew into a small interactive that was breaking all the rules. Typically interactive use HTML/CSS menu systems and hot spots (aka annotations) but a different approach was taken here. No HTML menus, no HTML hot spots. Each of these elements were built inside the 3D environment. Click on the menu or a hot spot and you will encounter a 3D motion graphic transition that adds flair and excitement to any interactive. The video opener was rendered using the same models used in the webgl demo to reduce time in production and overall cost of the production. The camera was specifically placed very tightly to the objects to capture the beauty of the device but also to impress upon those that low poly models can look really great… even close up.
High poly density, lights, motiongraphic transitions and non HTML Menus.
Modeles were completed in stages. Each component was created using low poly methodology and then subdivided to achieve the desired smoothness.
Having explored light background in the Toothbrush Demo, it was time to explore how best to achieve a dark scene. Lights were going to be needed to bring out the beauty of the curves, bevels and complex shapes. Two lights plus a HDR environment map was the calculated target souce number for lighting the scene. With this restruction low poly modeling was required to reduce the entire scene poly count to under 320,000 triangles in order to balance the performance desired vs visual quality. All object models were completed first keeping the triangle count as low as possible...about 200,000. The cabling was added last maximizing the number of triangles to keep the loops smooth as possible while staying under our 350,000 triangle target.
Motiongraphic 3D elements were incorporated. They are super light weight and speedy and add an element of motion that really helps simple interactives. Let us know your thoughts.
